There are a lot of homeowners who wonder what they can do to save money on their energy bill each month. If you are part of this group, you might be overpaying each month on your utility bill. There are things that you can easily do to make sure that you are being energy efficient in your home. Here are some tips.

1. Use The Sun

One thing that many people don't realize is that the sun can help you heat your house. In the winter you should let the sun in as much as possible. This will make the home warmer without costing you a penny. For example, during the hottest and sunniest part of the day you should open the curtains and the blinds to make sure that you are getting the sun inside your house. You will see that your home will increase in temperature.

Conversely, during the summer when you are trying to cool the house, make sure that you aren't letting the sun in. If you keep the blinds open all day your house will become like a green house and get hotter and hotter. This is why you should pull the drapes in the afternoon and when you leave the house always close the blinds. This will keep your house cooler.

2. Consider The Insulation

Another great thing you can do to make sure that your house is more energy efficient is to make sure that the house is insulating properly. If you have air seeping out of your house, it won't matter how much you pump your HVAC system your house won't hold a constant temperature. The most common places for the air to escape is the doors and windows. Around the doors you have something called weather stripping. This stripping will seal the door each time you close it to make sure that you don't lose your constant temperature inside the house.

Additionally, the windows play a big role. If your windows are old, or if they are not installed properly you will notice a major draft by the window. You can also check to see if the windows are sealed by touching the glass. The temperature of the glass should reflect the inside of the house, not the outside. So in the winter the windows shouldn't be too cold, they should be more like the inside of the house. If you find that they aren't sealing right, you might consider replacing them or having them reset.
